Smurfit Kappa Van Dam for Scania established a flexible palletbox to replace the wooden surrounds.

The box exists of only 5 parts en replaces the 3 formats wooden surrounds: 1200 x 1000 x 500/750/1000 mm. An extra advantage is the high degree of flexibility in packaging space for pick-orders. The boxes can be piled up and hold up to 3000 kg.

The box has the following components: outside box, ring 500 mm high, ring 250 mm high, plate in between and a lid. Depending on the orderpick results and the transport destination a combination of the parts can be made. An advantage is that required components can be choosen even in the last part of the process.

Advantages:

• Optimal containerload by flexibility in height (500-750-1000). Box can be closed after loading it (less air).
• Less packages needed. This simplifies the logistical process for employees, while they can use a regular box every time. Especially by orderpicking when the parts are different in size and weight this is easy.
• Less damage by using plates in between. The cardboard plates which separates the different layers, ensure that little products can be packed in bulk easier with less risk of damage.
• Box is suitable for sea freight. Without shell also suitable for “light” internal/European transport. “Overpackaging’ will not be the case.
• Monomaterial. Sea freight package without wooden/metal angle strengthening.
• User-friendly. Employees can put little things in the box easier while the “main” box is only 500 mm high. By using the cardboard plates in between a new floor is created, in this way it's easier to fill the box.
